Seaside Sprinters First Flyball Tournament
New Hampshire
On May 6 and 7, 2006 the Seaside Sprinters participated in their
first flyball tournament held at All Dogs Gym in Manchester, NH. The
two-day event included 26 teams from 5 states. Once the racing began,
team members realized how fun and exhilarating this exciting sport is.
The dogs must have enjoyed the racing as well, beating their own
personal record by more than a second and earning several titles along
the way. Two dogs took home their Flyball Dog titles: Spirit and Patriot
(both Weimaraners owned by Lori and Rich Reynolds), and two other dogs
earned their Flyball Dog and Flyball Dog Excellent titles: Hershey
(Labrador Retriever, owners Kim and Bob Daoust) and Tiki (Vizsla, owner
Katie Jordan). Molly-Dog (English Springer Spaniel, owner Bea DeGruttola)
was the only veteran on the team and currently has her Flyball Dog,
Flyball Dog Excellent and Flyball Dog Champion titles. The sixth dog on
the team is Scout (mix, owner Katie Jordan).
What is flyball? Flyball
is a relay race with four dogs on a team. The course consists of a start
and finish line, 4 hurdles and a spring-loaded box with a tennis ball.
Each dog must jump over the hurdles, retrieve the ball from the box, and
return over the 4 hurdles carrying the ball across the finish line. The
first team to complete the race without mistakes wins the heat. Flyball Team updates The Seaside Sprinters add another team! Congratulations to the Seaside Sprinters Fyball Club!! This new club began competing with their first team, The Salty Dogs, in May '06 and ten months later they took their second team, The Wave Runners, to All Dogs Gym in Manchester, NH for the club's sixth tournament. The two-day event turned out to be an exciting weekend for both dogs and owners. Not only did the "new" dogs do a great job but several titles were earned in the process! Since March the Seaside Sprinters have been to three more tournaments in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, our dogs have earned many new titles and the team has run its fastest time ever of 22.414 seconds. The Seaside Sprinters practice weekly at My Dog's Place in Mystic, CT. The practice is led by the team captain Bea DeGruttola, who has been involved in flyball for over eight years. The following are members of the team: Bea DeGruttola and her English Springer Spaniel "Molly-Dog" with 1316 points, FDCH-S and "Power Pup" her mix breed with 55 points - FD Katie Jordan(Co-Captain) and her Vizsla "Tiki" with 3027points - FDCH-G, All American "Scout" with 683 points - FDCH, and cockapoo "Addie" with 2948 points - FDCH-G Marge Lineweber and her Irish Setter "Derby" with 2743 points - FDCH-G Sheri Throop and her Standard Poodle "Lucy" with 354 points - FDX Gina Macaione and her Border Collie "Jasmine" with 1839 points - FDCH-S Megan Roche and her Old English Sheepdog "Oliver" with 62 points - FD Bill Loftus and his Australian Shepherd "Champ" with 461 points - FDX Joseph & Elizabeth Cefaratti and their Labrador Retriever "Cassie" with 50 points - FD Kari Daniels and her Labrador Retriever "Potter" with 17 points Kim Daoust and Amanda Throop Box Loaders Joshua Throop and Xochitl Hernandez-DeGruttola - Ball Chasers Abbreviations indicate Flyball titles: FD = Flyball Dog, FDX = Flyball Dog Excellent, and FDCH = Flyball Dog Champion. The dogs earn points towards a title when, as a team, they run the race under a specific time. If the race is completed in less than 32 seconds each dog earns 1 point, less than 28 seconds: 5 points, and less than 24 seconds: 25 points. Titles are awarded based on the number of points a dog has received. More information can be found on www.flyball.org or www.flyballdogs.com If you are interested in taking a flyball class, Bea teaches a beginners and intermediate level course. Please contact My Dog's Place for more information. More pictures from our recent tournament coming soon!

Client Appreciation Day 2007
Client Appreciation Day 2006 North Stonington Fair Grounds
Sunday October 9, 2005 We had 148 people and their dogs join us for a fun filled day at the North Stonington Fair Grounds for our second annual Client Appreciation Day.
The dogs didn't seem to mind the drizzle, they were too busy socializing in the big ring and learning new skills in the other rings. Many experienced dogs showed off their stuff on the Agility course, while novice dogs learned how to correctly negotiate the Agility equipment with the guidance of their owners and our instructors. In between the rain drops many dogs tried Rally Obedience, Michael showed them how to heel from one station to another performing an obedience behavior at each station. The 6 dogs that passed the Canine Good Citizen Test couldn't have cared less about the rain, their owners were so proud and so are we, congratulations. Laurie, our guest CGC evaluator from the Good Dog Spot in Bloomfield, was happy to have met and tested these well trained dogs. All proceeds from the CGC tests were donated to WAGS - the local therapy dog group. Kristie and her Doggie Dancing class got things warmed up with their fast paced musical dance demonstration. Kristie also taught some fun tricks and games, before we knew it dogs had learned to wave, spin, give high five, back up, roll over, speak, bow and sit pretty. Dr. Betsy Graham volunteered her time to implant microchips, 18 dogs took advantage, these dogs can now be safely returned home should they ever get lost. With all this activity we were sure glad to have Ken and Ray on the grill flipping burgers for the two--legged guests, they kept everyone warm and well fed. There was no lack of tasty treats for the four legged guests either with our friends from The Ruff House in attendance. They brought the best selection of biscuits and treats that were impossible to resist.
Deborah Lee and Nikki from Canine Water Sports showed us how much fun it can be to enjoy the water with your dog. They had videos, a slide show, and bunches fun merchandise and toys. Bob from B & G Karaoke said "rain, what rain" he kept us entertained by spinning tunes and announcing all the activities including the winners of the Basket Raffle. Our wonderful friends and local businesses out did themselves this year with their Basket Raffle donations. We received donations from Bravo Raw Diet, Foxwoods, I Am Dog (Bea DeGruttola), Mohegan Sun, The Ruff House, Bufords Restaurant, Dot and Ken Hazlin, Mystic Seaport, Citizens Bank, Tenagra Doberman Pinschers & Labrador Retrievers and My Dog's Place. Just over $300 was raised from the raffle and all the proceeds went to benefit the DJ Fund and PAWZ - a community based group for the prevention of dog bites. Thanks to all who joined us for the fun, we sure enjoyed your company on a drizzly Sunday afternoon. A special thank you to all our helpers and volunteers, their great work and good spirits made it all possible. See ya next year. |
